CPP & EI Deductions for Ontario Employer

Do the Calculations Correctly Each Time Without Questioning Yourself

Employers have to make deductions from their employees’ paychecks and make payments on their own, and while it sounds easy enough, it becomes much harder when you think about annual limits, mid-year hires, and CPP2, which is still a relatively new concept that most payroll software does not handle properly. We make sure that your deductions are correct every time and without having to question yourself as to whether CRA will accept them.

Affordable CPP EI Contribution Calculation for Ontario Businesses

CPP EI Contribution Calculation seems like a payroll system task to perform — but not always. In case there is a new hire, role change, or when income exceeds a certain limit in the middle of a pay period, dedicated software can calculate it incorrectly. Beta Taxes provides payroll assistance at a fixed price to ensure you catch all these nuances.

No matter how many people you employ, be it two or two hundred, we make sure that the deductions will be done properly every time.

Complexity of Pensionable and Insurable Earnings

The amount by which CPP and EI are actually calculated, Pensionable and Insurable Earnings, does not always represent the gross earnings of an employee. Though some of the taxable benefits may be taken into account while calculating the CPP but not in EI and vice versa, it is very hard to find out which portion of the earnings of an employee is pensionable or insurable.

It is particularly significant in connection with the Employer CPP EI Contribution since the employer has to contribute equally to CPP but multiple times the contribution made to EI.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How are CPP and EI Deductions Different?

The Canada Pension Plan pays out retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, whereas Employment Insurance pays out in case of job loss and for parental leave and other similar instances. Both of these deductions come from the payrolls of employees and have their own separate contribution rates.

CPP2 is a supplementary CPP contribution payable after an individual surpasses the first earnings ceiling in his/her yearly pay, and until a certain second earnings ceiling is reached. CPP2 contribution is relatively new and cannot be calculated properly automatically in some payroll systems.

This is true – employers must pay an equal amount of CPP contribution as well as pay more EI rate multipliers than their employees do. This is an obligation of the employer, which is not optional but often unexpected for new employers.

Once the maximum amount is reached, no further deductions will be made during the remaining period of the year. An employee can receive a refund of his/her excess contribution if he/she works for two different employers during the year.

Pensionable and Insurable Earnings refer to those parts of compensation on which contributions to CPP and EI are calculated. These amounts do not always correspond to gross pay and should be defined differently for CPP and EI.

We can check the payroll for prior periods and correct any mistakes such as under-deduction that should be sent to the CRA, as well as over-deduction that can be returned to your employees.

Under-deduction usually requires correction and sending money to the CRA, while over-deduction means that you have to refund the amount of money to the employee.

They are different every year as the rates and earnings ceilings for CPP and EI contributions are set by the Government of Canada every year. That is why it is necessary to update payroll every January.

Self-employed people make payments to the CPP in the form of an individual tax return, where the person pays both employer's and employee's share of the CPP, but EI is not required unless you opt in for the self-employed EI program.

CPP and EI calculation is a standard part of every pay run we do within our Payroll Services. This page provides additional information about the calculation of CPP and EI for the people who are interested in this process.
