Why Do Businesses Forget T4A Filing Services But Not Their T4s?
While most businesses remember that they need to file T4 forms, they forget that they are also required to file their T4A Filing Services forms. The latter cover such cases as commissions paid to contractors, service fees, scholarships, and retirement allowances; however, none of them counts as employment income that would be reported in T4. Businesses making regular payments to contractors but failing to file T4A forms is a very frequent error that we discover during our year-end review process.
Determining whether a business needs to file T4 or T4A depends on Employee vs. contractor classification, because, in case of an audit, the CRA may consider your contractor to be an employee if he or she works for set hours, using your business equipment and receiving direct supervision, and that would result in additional costs.

Expert Guidance for Canadian Home Sale Tax Matters
![]()
Alex has been so amazing! I sold my home shortly after moving to the UK on a temporary visa and it was so stressful navigating the Canadian tax system. Even from afar – across the world, Alex took his time walking me through what I need to do, advised me on next steps, and how he can help me through calls on Whatsapp and email. I received the letter I needed from him to proceed with the closing of my Canadian home sale. Thank you so much to Alex and the team for your guidance and help! I appreciate it so very much 😊.

FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a T4 slip differ from a T4A?
The T4 slip includes the earnings of an employee including salary or statutory deductions. The T4A slip includes all other kinds of payments such as commissions to a contractor, fee for services, scholarship, and retirement allowance of people who are not your employees.
When are T4 and T4A slips due?
They are both due on or before the last day of February of the year following the calendar year covered by the slip, regardless of whether filed in paper or electronic format.
Should I issue T4A to all my contractors?
Generally, you must issue a T4A if your contractor received more than $500 in fees for services. We will verify your payments to make sure you do what you need to do.
What will happen to me if I issue the wrong type of slip?
When there is misclassification of workers, where an individual who is treated as a contractor but actually works as an employee receives a T4A, then CRA will reassess for the CPP and EI that must be deducted, as well as the issuance of a T4 slip.
What will be the penalty for filing a T4/T4A slip late?
The amount of penalty will be determined based on the number of slips to file and their lateness, and it ranges from $100 to $7,500.
How does employee vs contractor classification work for T4 filing?
CRA examines aspects such as whether the person works his/her own hours, uses his/her own tools, and is independent vs. integrated within your company. We will compare your work arrangement with the above factors.
Can we amend T4 and/or T4A that has been issued with mistakes?
Yes – amendment slip filing allows correction of errors made in previously filed T4s or T4As, which may require issuance of the new version of the T4/T4A.
Is T4 Summary Preparation separate from the individual T4 slips?
Not quite – the T4 Summary is filed along with your T4 slips but it is not meant to be used to provide the same information as a T4/T4A slip; rather, it summarizes all your T4 amounts and reconciles them with your tax remittances throughout the year.
Do you offer year-end T4/T4A filing services separately or only in combination with the entire payroll services?
Both – sometimes our clients ask for year-end T4/T4A filing services alone, other times it is included in our Payroll Services.
What information do you need to file our T4s and T4As?
Your payroll and contractor payment records for the entire year and your remittance history with the CRA. We will verify the details depending on your employees and contractors' situation.
